An Account of the Murder of Johann Cornies V

Katharina Petker has provided information on the murder in 1919 of Johann Cornies V and his two friends, Peter Unruh and Cornelius Janzen. Her Information sources are the website of Margarita Dick and Janzen family recollections. Margarita Dick is the grandniece of Johann Cornies V, and Katharina Petker is the grandniece of Cornelius Janzen.

Deutsch:

From the website of Margarita Dick, grandniece of Johann Cornies V:

During the Revolution this young man (Johann Cornies V) was brutally murdered (1919) by the bandits. He was the last male descendant of Johann Cornies (1789-1848).  From the life story of Anna Dick (born Unruh), wife of Franz Dick (brother of my grandfather), her brother Peter was murdered together with Johann Cornies:

"they were attacked by a drunken band in hiding, stripped, taken into the field and there killed with sabres. One of this group ............., personally told us everything later. That same person has endured a great deal and often wished that he were lying in the grave with his companions. Murdered with Peter were Hans Cornies and our neighbour Cor. Janzen. A Russian found them lying in the field and buried them. We heard this terrible news indirectly. And we asked ourselves, "O God why did you allow this atrocity to happen?" How unspeakably difficult it was when the caskets in our adjoining outbuilding were taken into the yard and then the young men of Ohrloff loaded the 3 caskets in order to get the bodies. In the interim, the Whites had again succeeded in capturing our district. The bodies were found and brought home. We did not see them as they had already been lying in the ground for 6 weeks. All 3 caskets stood in our churchyard in Ohrloff and in the church was the saddest funeral that I have ever experienced. Peter and Hans Cornies were lowered together into one grave."

Recollections of the Janzen family by Katharina Petker, grandniece of Cornelius Janzen:

This "neighbour Cor. Janzen" was the brother of my grandmother. He is identified in the photograph of the assembled Ohrloff landowners in the post of 4 Dec 2015 . A good picture of him is given in the post of 20 May 2015, "Kornelius Janzen, 1893-1919".  The story of his murder is familiar to our family and relatives. Grandmother said that he was wearing a cap on the inside of which he had bleached the first letters of his name i.e., "K.J.". Perhaps it is the same cap he is wearing in the photo of Ohrloff landowners; he is sitting on the lowest step at the right. When the victims were found, the cap enabled reliable confirmation that they were the missing men. Shortly thereafter, his father, Kornelius Kornelius Janzen, 1869-1919, was also killed. He is also in the photo of landowners and in the portrait "Kornelius Kornelius Janzen, 1869-1919". The bandits came onto the yard, beat the man severely and in keeping with Russian custom asked what his last wish was. He wanted to pray. During his prayer, 10 men shot him. The whole family was ordered outside to watch.
